This week's collection is a bunch of laid-back soulful grooves, kicking off with one of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite artists on one of my favourite record labels. What a line-up too: Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and Billy Cobham all play on that first track.
And the groove sets in from there. This is what Sunday afternoons are about. Enjoy. Click here to listen Milt Jackson – People Make The World Go RoundThe term Cool Jazz stands for a particular type of jazz characterised by an intellectual, emotionally detached approach. It's most often typified by Miles Davis's 'Birth of the Cool' record - which comes close to a European classical formalism, and is just at arms-length remove from Gunther Schuller's Third-Stream music. But jazz that is 'cool' is a much broader term.
I wrote a blog post about 'cool' this morning - and this is the selection of tunes that I chose to help me put those words together.

A superb musician, and - it turns out - a thoroughly nice man.
The project I'm doing is called Holland for a Week and it kicks off tomorrow. This programme (or playlist, if you prefer) features tracks off many of Dave's albums as a leader, as well as some of his notable appearances as a collaborator and sideman... including my favourite Miles Davis album, In A Silent Way. Enjoy. Click here to listen Dave Holland – Blues For C.M.Music from "elsewhere" this week. That is, of course, unless you come from one of the places represented here. Just thought I might have been a little America-centric in recent times, which (of course) is always easy to do with jazz. And no - there's no kiwi jazz in here. I'm saving it all up. Still on holiday, and still in a laid back frame of mind. It's cold out, but signs of spring are emerging - so I'm sitting out on my porch (in my mind) leaning back on the old wooden rocking chair and patting the dog.

I'm on holiday at the moment, and it's been a few weeks or more, so I thought it was about time I got back on the jazzwagon. And I thought I'd do it with a bit of a Latin twist this week.
You might want to put your dancing shoes on.
